Course Description

Audience: This course is for middle school students entering grade 6 through 12 in the Fall 2017.

 

Please note: Students will have the opportunity to attend local sports events and do live reporting using the skills they have learned in the program. The students will attend a Yard Goats game on July 19, 2017 at 12:05 pm (transportation included.) The cost of the program includes complimentary tickets to the game and lunch.

 

Have you dreamed about being a sports anchor or journalist? Can you picture yourself live reporting a game to thousands of fans? This is your chance to learn how to learn about sports journalism and have fun doing it! No experience necessary.

 

Students will learn how to do sports journalism, with an emphasis on multimedia reporting and anchoring, including the following:

    - Writing, Interviewing, and Storytelling

    - Shooting, Editing, and Producing Video Reports

    - On-Air Reporting, Anchoring, and Producing

 

This program is designed to teach students the different aspects of sportscasting and sports journalism. Students will gain experience using professional camera equipment, TV studio equipment, and technical editing software. 

 

Instructor Information

Steve Yavner

Steve Yavner is currently Assistant Professor of Journalism at CCSU, and runs the Sports Journalism concentration. He was a sports anchor and reporter for 10 years in Florida and at CNN. He spent an additional 15 years as a news anchor, reporter, producer, and manager in Florida, Boston, and Philadelphia, including running the CBS4 newsroom in Miami for eight years. Before coming to CCSU, he taught at the University of Miami and Fairfield University.  Steve earned his Ph.D. from New York University.
