Scholars for Life!
Speaker Series

& Virtual Movie Club!

Overview

CCSU faculty and guest speakers bring their passions and knowledge to our Scholars For Life! Speaker series!  We are offering our talks on campus again, and if you are not ready to visit us in person we are also streaming the talks!  We are offering a hot buffet lunch or dinner before the talk too.  It’s a great way to visit with old friends and make new friends.   Everyone is welcoming!  Just let us know if it’s your first time here and we’ll take care of you!

How it Works

For our virtual talks, we will be using Zoom. When you register you will receive information on how to access the talk.

For our in-person talks, you will receive information on the location of our talks.

Previous Talks

Our Scholars For Life! Speaker Series sessions are recorded. The talks will stay on our website for 30 days, and you can request a link during that time to watch a talk you may have missed.

The April 8th Solar Eclipse: The Good, the Bad, and the Cloudy (IN-PERSON Attendance Registration)

Dr. Kristine Larsen

Now that the Great American Eclipse, Part 2, is in the history books, let’s take a behind-the-scenes look at what went right (millions of people successfully observing the eclipse), what went wrong (massive traffic in New England), and what was just plain silly (selling the eclipse, including $200 parking!). Join Dr. Kristine Larsen as she recounts her personal journey, and those of her friends, across the country, and how victory was snatched from the jaws of defeat. Dr. Kristine Larsen has been an astronomy professor at Central Connecticut State University since 1989. Her teaching and research focus on the intersections between science and society, including sexism and science; science and popular culture (especially science in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien); and the history of science. She is the author of the books Stephen Hawking: A Biography, Cosmology 101, The Women Who Popularized Geology in the 19th Century, Particle Panic!, Science, Technology and Magic in The Witcher: A Medievalist Spin on Modern Monsters, and the forthcoming The Sun We Share: Our Star in Popular Media and Science.
