Preparing for the SHRM Certification Exam: Let’s Do This Together!

Who Should Enroll

Eligibility Requirements

Individuals who perform HR duties and wish to verify, validate, enhance and/or expand their HR capabilities are likely candidates for SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification.

SHRM membership is not required for eligibility and individuals need not be employed at the time they apply.
The SHRM-CP certification is for individuals that perform general HR/HR-related duties; or for those pursuing a career in Human Resource Management.
The SHRM-SCP certification is for individuals that have a work history of at least 3 years performing strategic level HR/HR-related duties; or for SHRM-CP credential holders who have held the credential for at least 3 years and are working in, or are in the process of transitioning to, a strategic level role.

Instructor

Ms. Orlena Cowan-Bailey

Orlena is a Hartford native, Weaver High School and Fairfield University Alum with a B.A. in Organizational Communications and minor in Marketing. She earned her HR Certificate from the University of Saint Joseph and also boasts the HR’s leading and premier certifications; Senior Professional in HR (SPHR) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP).

Orlena Cowan-Bailey is a multi-faceted, strategic human resource business partner and culture consultant. She boasts progressive leadership experience managing a full spectrum of HR processes, initiatives and projects. She is a thought leader, people leader and disruptor – sparking innovation, influence and inspiration to yield business solutions & results. Some of her career highlights include opening multiple stores for Target as an HR Executive Team Leader and serving as HR Officer for CT transit during the rise and launch of CT Fastrak, Connecticut’s multi-million and first bus rapid transit system. Orlena currently is a Human Resource Business (HRBP) Partner at MassMutual, a Fortune 100 financial services company currently supporting the organization’s corporate functions. She’s also a licensed Realtor for Century 21 All Points Realty helping clients across CT and beyond fulfill their real estate goals.

She’s an active SHRM Volunteer Leader and recent Chapter President for the Human Resource Association of Central CT (HRACC). Orlena was elected to serve as Director-Elect for the CT SHRM State Council which has oversight of all SHRM affiliate chapters across Connecticut.

She is a Hartford Business Journal “40 under 40” award winner which recognizes outstanding young professionals in the Greater Hartford area that excel in their industries through their leadership roles. Mrs. Bailey is a proud mentor to multiple emerging leaders and professionals. She is a published writer and content creator for the HR Communicator and Hartford Business Journal. She is also a volunteer for the Urban League of Hartford, BSL Foundation and Junior Achievement.

Location

This class is run as an online class.

The online class is three-hour scheduled sessions on Thursday evenings. All sessions will be live.

Students will need a computer with video and a microphone.
